Calvary Lutheran Church seeks a Director to manage its Food Shelf program.

The Calvary Food Shelf program has operated for more than 40 years and has seen significant growth over the past five years following the Covid-19 pandemic and the murder of George Floyd. It is located in newly renovated space in the Belfry Apartments at the corner of 39th Street and Chicago Avenue. Operations involve Wednesday and Saturday appointments for clients, Tuesday and Thursday morning truck deliveries, weekly home deliveries, shopping and packing. All tasks are accomplished with a small staff and a significant cohort of more than 100 diverse volunteers from the community and the congregation.

The Food Shelf Director is key to administering the Food Shelf program supported by a part-time assistant plus dozens of volunteers focused on serving the basic needs of people living with food insecurity. The role is supported by the Pastor, the Food Shelf Advisory Board, the Calvary Social Justice Committee, the Church Administrator, and the Calvary Church Council Executive Committee. This position is responsible for simultaneously running the operation with the support of the Food Shelf Advisory Board, while engaging closely with Calvary’s Food Shelf Task Force to imagine and envision what is needed for the future. The critical strategy work to be carried out by the Task Force, the Director, and the Advisory Board is focused on sustainably maintaining the work of the Food Shelf program to meet the community’s needs around food security, as well as focusing on improving and increasing efficiency in daily operations (examining funding, policies, scope definition, etc.).

Qualifications: Bilingual Spanish-speaking candidates with experience living with food insecurity are preferred. Primary responsibilities for this position include:

  • Securing sufficient food inventory

  • Volunteer training and supervision

  • Operations and financial management

  • Fundraising

  • Marketing and communications

  • Relationship building and community outreach
